The birth of a new quilt

LOG CABIN QUILT SWAP!

This is for the girls on EB and Sandi.

This is a material swap to make log cabin blocks as shown below.Block One

Block Details

Red centre - 2 1/2 inches square

Warm (pink, orange, yellow) and cool (purple, green, blue) halves to the block

1 x warm - 1 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches
1 x warm 1 x cool - 1 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches
1 x warm 1 x cool - 1 1/2 x 4 1/2 inches
1 x warm 1 x cool - 1 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches
1 x warm 1 x cool - 1 1/2 x 6 1/2 inches
1 x warm 1 x cool - 1 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches
1 x cool - 1 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches

Each block will be 7 3/4 finished (sewen into quilt) or 8 1/4 raw
Block Two

I made the two blocks above different ways.

Block One - Strips were sewen onto the side where it needed to go and then trimmed to length using the edge of the last strip (or center) as a guide. Worked quick well and you would be able to chain piece quite easily.

Block Two - Strips were cut to exact lengths (as above) and sewen in order to the block. When sewing this block (which was a lot slower than the first) the strips needed to be pinned ans 'stretched' to line up thus the block has a stretched look to it. The edges have the 'waved' stretch look to them. I also found this method to have slightly larger measurements....8 3/8 instead of 8 2/8. (you can see the wrinkles in the picture) These are scanned blocks....Camera still out of action.

Material Details

I have done a lot of serious calculations to work out how much material to swap. Each block has a total of 66 inches of material (1 1/2 inches wide)

All up the swapped material will total roughly 1 1/4 FQ's. So not much really. And remember you get it all back.

There is enough material to make 5 blocks, from the swapped material.

Material for the swap must be cut into strips 1 1/2 inches in width and no smaller than 2 1/2 inches in length (they need to be bigger as well of course but this is the smallest size if you are going through your scrap bag)

Total length of one colour is to be 300 inches. I know this seams like a lot but out of a FQ you can get 245 inches of 1 1/2 inch strips

So all up you are sending 300 inches of in material in 1 1/2 inch strips in one colour that you have nominated.

Does this sound confusing??? LOL I'm sure it does!! Please ask me any questions in the EB Quilting thread.

My nominated colour is orange!!
